page 1421 – Shockingly, A Main Character Says Something
I kind of worked myself into being displeased with this page. I felt bad about how many of the previous pages had totally punked out at showing real backgrounds, so I made a real point of fitting in the usual slew of vending machines in the final panel again. Except, when I did it that way, it felt… wrong. I’m not sure how good a job I can do explaining this, but the layout that was forming around the page felt like it was making way too big a deal out of something that really isn’t dramatic at all. I dunno, maybe I’ve been exposed to too much slop writing that tries to make every third line feel significant and epic, but I had the absolutely irresistible compulsion to throw the other characters into the background and say something silly… even though it was WAY too late to be drawing more art OR to rework the layout in a way that would result in lots of wasted space. Drat.
In my own mild defense, it was a VERY busy weekend and I kind of had to bash out the bulk of this page during stolen moments between other things. In fact, a decent part of the last panel was inked at a picnic table at a park while desperately trying to keep the sheet of paper from blowing away. And ya’ll thought I never left my computer desk, didn’t ya?

Despite the fact that she in no way has any ability to prevent any of the bad things she previously mentioned by being there herself. Or is she going to glare at the ship’s explosive decompression until it recompresses itself and apologizes?
See, these are exactly the sort of reasons why Mariska bet that Ichabod was wrong about Layla inviting herself along.
It didn’t even take any great stretch of his Nitpicker skills, since she’s already done the exact same thing before

Just wait until she finds out that for safety in space travel she will have to wear her favorite containment suit again 🙂

And that’s why Mariska shouldn’t make bets about a complete stranger to her with someone who actually knows that person.
I was going to say something, but then I realized it’d actually work well in an upcoming comic, so I’ll just save it for that 😀
What she CAN do is say “No” to obviously stupid ideas. Also, Layla’s mere presence would result in Trigger being less likely to do something stupid just because he could. He isn’t going to get his sister seriously harmed for no good reason, after all.
…this is counteracted by the fact that Layla’s presence will likely make Marshall more likely to mess up (if that blush is anything to go by), and will absolutely make at least Avi less likely of following instructions due to her being understandably upset at him a couple of hours ago. And, since Avi is, for all practical purposes, the team leader, the rest of the team will follow his lead.
would ‘obviously stupid ideas’ include “kids going out into space in a ship made from recycled junk food” 🙂
When Mad Science is involved, that’s honestly one of the safer possibilities. Seriously, the more insane the fundamental building materials, the safer the end result, because they let the “Mad” part of Mad Science roam free with the materials, resulting in the actual mechanical application of forces to follow more standardised practices.
