page 1455 – Don’t Eavesdrop When People Talk
Okay, THIS is the page that was supposed to go up last time, and I freely admit that the overall pacing is a bit thrown off now as a result of that random cutaway. However, having finished editing the whole thing, I can confirm that it absolutely was the right call to not attempt it while in the dazed state I was in on Friday morning. I know that clicking the blur effect a lot doesn’t SEEM like that big of a deal, but the sheer number of layers I have to have open to make this kind of effect work is just ASKING for something to go wrong, and that’s when I’ve more or less got things together. It’s proof that I was in really top form on Monday that I ONLY had elements on the entirely wrong layer twice.
And yeah, on that note, I do feel a lot more recovered from Otakon now than I was last week, which HOPEFULLY means this Friday’s update will come with the much delayed new TWC Voting Incentive and no further excuses.
(Oh, and just a reminder: unlike a lot of Far Out There’s unexplained plot points, I actually DO know the answer to this question)
I can see a situation where you actually answer the question under the blur of Ichabod’s conversation in panel 2, but, in addition to being blurred, it’s also been turned into one of those fonts where the language looks a little like English, but isn’t. And, if you’re doing that, you might as well send it through Google Translate to ensure the words wouldn’t make sense even if translated back into a standard font.
Ichabod’s coaching May on speaking in some exotic language for a whole page, and at the end somebody’s like “What were you guys talking about?”
My thoughts were more along the lines of either “Ichabod’s voice got muffled by something and Trigger & Marshall literally couldn’t have overheard what he said, even if they were both quiet” or “May’s loud, and Ichabod isn’t, so the boys couldn’t overhear Ichabod from this distance, while what May is saying is clear even if they aren’t paying attention”.
I mean, yeah. That’s what’s happening HERE. I was just throwing out another possibility for the future.
Just have them talk about something specific that no non-Nitpicker character (apart from Avatar) knows about, instead of having them literally speak another language.
…wait a moment, I need to come up with something. It can’t be mechanical engineering, because Trigger knows that beyond their capabilities. It can’t be Accounting or Law, since Layla should have a strong enough foundation in those to have some understanding of what’s being said. And it can’t be something completely out there…
All I’m coming up with is Textiles (cloth making). I thought about history, but mentioning combat or certain titles would make it fairly obvious what they’re talking about, while talking about “Weaves” and “Polymer’s” are less so. Particularly if you sci-fi up the production process.
As a side note, did you know that there’s a mechanical benefit to having woven glass wires behind a sheet of aluminium? Aluminium is strong, but aren’t rigid, while pulled glass is strong, but is basically just threads. Apply aluminium over a woven “sheet” of glass “wire”, and the glass provides the rigidity that the aluminium needs to be more useful, all with minimal weight changes.

Wait, is it not Mariska? I took it for granted from both their reactions to the reaction to her continued teasing, earlier, that what she got interrupted from saying was “it’s ok when I do it, because I know he’d never cheat on me” or somesuch.
Naw, they’re very VERY heavily in the “like siblings” category with each other. (Also, waaaay back in page 857/858 Ichabod talks about the mysterious girlfriend with Mariska, and she’s responding as though it’s somebody else)
