page 1281 – Meaningful Counsel
Clearly, all his recent experiences have made Ichabod MUCH better with kids.
Also, I’m clearly doing a less labor-intensive page this time (that is, no dialog) so that I’ll have more creative juices left over to finish the rest of Conventional Wisdom’s remaining Animazement pages before Otakon. That, or I’m just doing my penance for those multiple Wall of Text pages earlier. These are not mutually exclusive options.
But yeah, just as an extra reminder: there’s still not going to be new TWC Voting Incentives until after Otakon, because WOW I did not properly process just how quickly the time between these two conventions would actually pass. I mean, I’ve got all the remaining Conventional Wisdom stuff penciled out at this point, so I SHOULD be able to get the rest done by the end of this weekend, but that won’t really leave room for much else… and it HAS to get done by the weekend, because I’ll need to spend the bulk of NEXT week actually getting ready for the trip. And just for the record, “getting ready” includes not just finishing page 1282, but also getting as much of 1283 done ahead of time, because I’m almost certainly not going to feel like doing much of ANYTHING on Monday the 31st.
Hey, he didn’t give her a nitpicking-lecture about the technology that Stuanilier Citizens “secretly” use when living outside of the touristy areas, or are in areas that aren’t legally observable by the public for one reason or another.
I think it’s less a case of non-steam technology being “secret” and more that they just kind of “cheat” when it makes things more convenient. Like when you see a house that’s designed to look like an old-fashioned log cabin with fireplaces and period-accurate lamps and everything, but it’s also got modern electricity and indoor plumbing and all the other modern amenities discretely worked in as well.
I wasn’t talking about that, politicians and the like using standard non-steam technology to communicate with politicians on other planets is reasonable, as is the other long-distance communications purposefully kept separate from the gear-grid. No, I’m talking about the gated “villages” of 10,000 people that are far away from anywhere the tourists are allowed to go, that only have the exterior that LOOKS like it works on the Steam & Gear-Grid, while actually powered entirely by standard energy technology.
Alternatively, I’m talking about the tourist hotels that promote their services as completely gear-powered, but anything that they can easily hide, like their laundry, utilize as much galactic standard non-steam & non-gear based tech as possible, with a possible facade of gear-based tech for the occasional visitor that manages to enter. Things like that.
Oh yeah. May definitely doesn’t know/WANT to know the difference between actually gear-based technology and stuff that just maintains the aesthetic.
On one hand, an oversight like THAT seems like a problem for a hopeful Nitpicker. On the other hand, it is literally only relevant to a singular occupied moon in the entire known universe, and so long as she doesn’t do any jobs near her home, it shouldn’t come up.
That said, I want it on record that I suspect that Avi thinks May is attractive, and if it wasn’t for her being about the same age as him, annoying, passionate, connected to his babysitter, and the same age as him (repeated for emphasis, as the fact that Layla’s a few years older is important), he’d want to date her.
I’ll just leave this link here 🙂

Yeah, his first reaction to seeing her does contradict that possibility, but it also fits under the “annoying” part. Add to the fact that she outright stated that THEY have unrequited crushes on her (I didn’t say he was CRUSHING on her, just that he thought that she was attractive), when in front of a girl that they DID share an unrequited crush on… And that means their reaction to her doesn’t really outright say anything about how they feel about MAY. Beyond the words “she is SO weird”.
she’s “weird”….says the boy who believes he is the leader of an intergalactic superhero team….
OK.
Clearly, the weirdest thing about her is that she doesn’t realize how TOTALLY COOL that is!
At least there’s one girl on board who recognizes the value of a good intergalactic superhero team…..
