page 486 – a wild rich guy appears!
I gotta get all critic-y about how this page turned out, or at least the last part. If a previously unmentioned character is going to make a dramatic entrance, it should be, you know, DRAMATIC. Like, several panels of the dude walking down a hall and then a big reveal as he throws some doors open. You know, the sort of visual storytelling you’re supposed to do in a COMIC. Problem is, I’ve kind of got myself stuck in doing this flashback story based around Layla’s narration. Suddenly shifting the style out of nowhere for a single scene just wouldn’t have worked, and the REST of the story simply would take too long if I showed instead of told (heck, establishing the “truckers are heroes” bit alone probably would have taken two or three pages to do correctly) And thus, we’re stuck with this less-than-epic moment here.
I guess the real reason this bugs me is because this guy is NOT some random character I cooked up last week. Remember back when I’d just started doing Voting Incentives and I posted a bunch of characters who hadn’t appeared yet? Yup, there he is, two whole years ago. And better yet, the character wasn’t even conceived for THIS story, I just threw him in as sort of an advanced preview of the ACTUAL arc he’s supposed to be in. (Oh, and fun fact: “Disonar de Kantner” isn’t the name I had in mind when I drew the preview pic. Honestly, I can’t remember exactly what his name was then, ‘cos the notepad I wrote it in is at my parents’ house right now. I’ve actually moved TWICE since I first scribbled out most of this stuff)
Well, as long as I’m posting links, I’ll go ahead and get to the rest. I’m still looking for feedback on the Far Out There Christmas Story issue. I’ve managed to get a rough concept together thanks to the feedback I’ve already received, but there’s still plenty of room for someone else to squeeze an idea or two in!
And, of course, speaking of Voting Incentives, new Killer Station of Deadly Doom!
(Historical Notes: I think this flashback may be the last time we would ever see Disonar’s hair in grayscale, after this I think I always used a full-color rainbow effect on him no matter what. Also, not only can I not link to that old Voting Incentive right now… but I’m kinda glad. Re-reading the old comments reminded me that the Incentive originally sat up for YEARS with a typo, and I’m not sure if the copy I have saved over here is fixed or not. It’s probably not.)
