page 7 – Nitpickers Who Poke Around and the Greedy People Who Hire Them
Original note – Feb 22, 2008
Here’s a good lesson to learn about Nitpickers right away, they LOVE poking around in places they’re not supposed to. Telling them not to look at something just makes ’em that much more convinced that it’s exactly what they were looking for.
And just in case you think Trigger should be a little more apprehensive about meeting another person after a lifetime of near-total isolation… you may be right. I dunno, I never lived in a bunker my whole life.
(Historical Note: In retrospect, Trigger being excited here is one of the few things he does that’s NOT out of character)
Random question: Who named Trigger “Trigger”?
His parents? The people who paid to have him sealed in the bunker? Or Layla’s parents? Or maybe that’s not really his name, but he was only described in their contract as “trigger” so they assumed that was his name?
I think “Trigger” was meant as sort of a code name. Once it was time to start their plan, they would “pull the trigger” as it were. Actually, it’d be very fitting if it was Layla’s Dad who decided to actually use it as a personal name. It seems like the sort of thing he would do.
Out of universe, I was trying to come up with a “name” that sounded really impersonal and vaguely mechanical, yet could still be gotten used to. I wish I could remember what brought me to “Trigger” specifically, but if there ever was a specific “ah hah!” moment, it’s lost to time.
At first it reminded me of Roy Rogers’s horse. But now I can’t imagine him being named anything else.
