2021 Christmas Presents – page 17
I’ve not-even-really-joked numerous times that Far Out There could really do with a wiki, but what would REALLY make me feel legit would be some kind of print guide. I still have many a fond memory of flipping through my big ol’ copy of the Star Trek Encyclopedia when I was a kid. It only covered as far as the first season of DS9, and it was STILL a friggin’ monster of a book.
Wait, Star Wars, DS9? I think there’s a mistake there somewhere.
YES. Start Trek. That is getting changed right now, thank you.
It just seems weird to me already that a Star Trek Wiki used to be in paper book form. How inconvenient. I mean, how would you search it? And now it makes me feel OLD that the concept of an Encyclopedia of any kind that I grew up with is so outdated that it feels weird to me.
Which just makes Ichabod seem like even more of a nutcase for carrying around all those books like he does, considering his civilization would have many many more orders of magnitude more info to keep track of, and books would be millions of years out of style.
That book looks too thin for a “Complete Guide to NITPICKERS”. It could be big enough for a guide to Ichabod, alone. It’s likely closer to a “Complete Summarised Guide to Nitpickers”. Because it’s FOT, and not nitpicking on information about the nitpickers is wrong.
I’m still unsure if these are all gifts that exist in the real world (hypothetically) and refer back to the FOT Webcomic on the internet, or gifts that exist in the FOT Universe and refer back to in-universe things – If it’s the latter, then that’s definitely a valid nitpick, that would have to be “volume 1” of a multivolume set, and even then probably only for that one group of nitpickers (what do you call a group of nitpickers under a single manager – that really ought to have a name – like a “pod” of nitpickers or something. Is there a word for a group of Nits (the insects)? We could use that. but I digress…) On the other hand, if it’s the former and these are RL gifts, then the book could be sized legitimately to refer only to those facts that are established in continuity in the strip or which Blitz has planned out.
The idea is that the gifts exist in “our” world, although several of them are still presented like they’re in-universe products because that’s totally the kind of thing I’d do in real life.
And speaking of me being me, if you consider how often a “complete guide” of ANYTHING Far Out There related would include copious amounts of “the author hasn’t decided on this yet,” then it makes perfect sense for the book to be thinner than it otherwise ought to be. (also, the photo I used as the base for this image was of a DVD case instead of a book, which limited how thick I could photoshop the book into being)
…exist in our world but are presented like in universe products…
so one could see why I was confused… 😉
Really then this ought to say something like “Complete Guide to Nitpickers – 284th Edition*”. The author having changed his mind about various details the previous 283 times 😀
*which itself demonstrates the superiority of web wikis over print, otherwise we would have the 87 quadrillionth edition of Wikipedia by now
I could not figure out what the heck a “pg” was.
Then I realized that the p and g keys were right next to “of”
🙂
(hovertext nitpick)
Looks like somebody also needs to get me a complete guide to double checking the spelling before I hit post
