page 1185 – how to make the word “Plan” sound really weird
This is not unlike what writing this comic feels like: constantly flailing around about how great my ideas are until I’m finally backed into a corner and have to admit I have no idea what’s going on.
Actually, I’m being a little too hard on myself. While the specifics of this page are a recent invention, the general structure and punchline were actually written YEARS ago. Long-time readers will already know that May was first dreamed up a loooooong time ago, and I drew a few random pages of her and Ichabod interacting just to make sure this was a duo worth pursuing further. In that original scribble of a page, they were taking about Ichabod’s next nitpicking assignment (which I totally forget the details of) rather than Stilez, but the whole “You forgot”/Yes I did” exchange is almost word for word how it was written all those years ago. I love it when a plan comes together.
Oh, and speaking of that Voting Incentive link up there, not only did I manage to get this week’s new TWC Incentive finished ON TIME this week, but I’m gonna post some more old stuff onto the Incentive Gallery later this week. Who knows, maybe I’ll finally manage to work my way back to the actual chronological beginning this time!
Forget? No, May didn’t forget anything. She was too busy geeking out about the fact that she’d be helping Ichabod with something that she didn’t even hear a single word Mariska said.
@ Incentive: Of course she did that. Good for her. Also, adorable.
@ Link (2010 Incentive introducing May): Just like the author text says, you kept May the same regardless of the time difference between her mental conception and introduction. That original concept for Kevin is more unkempt than he ending up being, but did match his original introduction. Admittedly, Kevin was introduced that year. And, let’s be honest, Disonar’s character literally changed while you were playing around with Astrid around him, so it can be argued that Disonar’s character only went through minor changes before his introduction, and major changes shortly after his introduction. To the point where his 2010 picture could easily be a picture of him before he gained his fame, or got the rainbow hair that ended up being a jumping off point for him becoming easily recognisable, and through that, famous.
Even if you tune out the way Disonar changed from a writing standpoint, it’s the lack of the rainbow hair that really makes the guy unrecognizable to me. I can (and often do) draw everything else about him wildly off-model, but it’s always that hair that keeps him anchored.
Betting on Ichabod dealing with Stilez seems more like what the rest of the Nitpickers Guild is probably doing.
One would think so, but the problem with managing a betting pool on something like that is that everybody can already assume that Ichabod dealing with Stilez is going to go horribly wrong SOMEHOW. That’s just a given. They only thing they could wager on is the virtually limitless number of possibilities for HOW it could go wrong. The longer anybody knows Ichabod, the more they know that could be literallly anything. (At least with the question of if Ichabod/Stilez will get romantic, it’s a choice between just two options)
