page 982 – the big finish
| What the crap, me? I finally get a comic page finished AHEAD of time, and totally forget to actually load it on the site in advance? Man, I really AM getting too used to running behind schedule.
Well, anyway, I obviously didn’t manage to get a New Year’s comic done, but I think I have the most complaint-proof reason possible: I spent the time I would normally have used to draw an extra comic on making some late Christmas present coloring books for my niece and nephew. They’re, like, one and three. Go on, let’s see you complain about THAT! …and if you do, I’ll make up some extra story about delivering puppies to crippled orphans or something. But yeah, I’m scrambling to get extra material finished before MAGFest, which is why this page actually got done early for once, but it’s also throwing the Voting Incentives into chaos again. As I write this, today’s Incentive isn’t up yet (that’s actually one of the things I was doing instead of posting this page, until I realized how TOTALLY BACKWARDS that is) but it SHOULD be ready by the time most of you see this. I will NOT, however, be able to get another one done for Friday, I’m just calling that one right now. Maybe if I didn’t basically have to be ready to walk out the door by Tuesday night, but I do, and there’s only so much I can get done in that remaining amount of time. So, Booooo. I just had a pretty amazing idea for a new incentive series that I’ll start once all the MAGFest stuff is done, though. So, YAAAAAAAY! EDIT: And, of course, right as I’m supposed to be getting ready for a convention, website stuff starts to flip out and images start breaking. I THINK I’ve got enough of temporary fix that, if nothing else, the main pages of all the comics should work normally. However, if you actually start clicking around the side pages and find a lot of stuff that’s broken, yeah, I know. I’ll get it fixed sometime next week. |

@ Hover Text: The video’s of the Dairy Force probably wouldn’t help the rest of the team get into the posing spirit (Ginyu’s name is a pun on the Japanese word for Dairy Milk, while Burter was originally just Butter in Japanese rearranged, Recoome’s name originally included the word Cream, Guldo’s name was a pun on Yogurt, and Jeice’s was originally “Jīzu” a pun on the Japanese word for Cheese “chīzu”, but turned into a pun on Juice in English). Mostly due to the connotations of milk, and the reactions of the poses everyone in the show actually has. Including the last 2 members when there’s only 2 left.
Wow, I knew there were lots of pun names in DBZ, but I’d never heard that before!
Oh, god, the number of pun names in Dragon Ball is overwhelming. All the Saiyan’s have names that are puns on Vegetables, including Vegita, who’s name is a pun on the word Vegetable, and even the word Saiyan, which comes from a rearrangement of the Japanese word for Vegetable, Yasai. Half-Saiyan’s don’t follow this, however.
Bulma’s Family, the Briefs, are all named after underwear, including Bulma. With that knowledge, Bulma’s Son is Trunks and Daughter is Bra. Apparently English translators called Bra “Bulla” to cover that up (and they could get away with it due to Japanese using a mid-point between the English letters “L” and “R”).
Now I’m looking this up, because that’s some of the only one’s I know off the top of my head (excusing simple ones in English like Freiza, his father King Cold and his movie-only brother Cooler having all Cold Pun Names).
Goku’s Earth Name (Son Goku) is based on a Japanese “Sound Reading” of Sun Wukong’s name, while the name Goku means “Awaken to Emptyness” and refers to the amount of rice required to feed a person for a year. His adoptive father, who his first-born son is named after, Gohan, is a word for Rice Dishes, literally meaning “Awakening To Rice”.
I’m fairly certain that EVERY character in Dragon Ball has some sort of pun name. Here, a link to a list of them, with descriptions. Some seem to be guesses, though.
