page 877 – additional hair puns
Normally I feel the need to apologize when you, the reader, successfully guess where the comic is going before it gets there. But seriously, how could it NOT have resulted in Avatar and Tax also having new hairdos inflicted upon them? That’s just a given… However, I WILL apologize for doing such a crappy job on Avatar’s ‘do. That did NOT turn out the way I wanted it to. I was trying to do sort of a 70s Farrah Fawcett type thing, but really fell apart on me partway through the inking.
Speaking of things I normally do, I would normally be including a link to yesterday’s Halloween page to make sure nobody missed it… but come on. I KNOW single one of you saw it already when you checked the page this morning and didn’t see the new comic. Yeah, sorry about that. I almost posted a half-finished version earlier, but then I thought “Naw, the page is almost done. I can just power through and get the whole thing finished and online in just a little bit!” …one day I’ll learn not to think things like that.
Oh, and speaking of Halloween, there’s still a little bit left in the new Voting Incentive!
EDIT: News Post on Patreon regarding the current state of various things. You don’t have to actually be a patron to access this one, so everybody please read!
(Historical Notes: Minor artistic quibble on this one, but Layla’s first speech bubble REALLY should have been up top to fill in that empty space rather than covering up the characters we’re supposed to be looking at.)
@ Advertisement: It’s a morbid joke because it’s red like blood, and having to actually spell it out is going too far.
AAAAAaaaaahhhhh, I see now! Gright has secretly been a master of subtlety this whole time!
Not Gright, he’s a puppet, he gets moved around at his controller’s will. Gright’s advertisers can sometimes employ it, though, even if it’s only because they’re bored of being as overt as they usually are.
At least, that’s that Gright WANTS them to think…
Well, if one wanted to do RL sociopolitical commentary here, one might legitimately point out that given the massive proven negative health effects of consuming ANY kind of soda type drink, Gright could pretty much sponsor every one of them without any irony at all – it would just be truth-in-advertising.
So the real cynical/morbid irony is that there is actually no irony here at all.
In fact, Gright could pretty much honestly sponsor >75% of everything in the average supermarket, including entire sections of sodas, snack foods, processed meats, etc. Heck, Gright could even sponsor much of the “health food” section – Gright’s Sugar-Free Health Food Line (with extra added Saturated Fats and salt!), Gright’s Fat-Free Health Food Line (with extra added salt and sugars!) and so forth. Gright’s grocery sponsorship campaign is actually refreshingly honest, compared to most food advertising.
Or, one could say that, if one wanted to do RL social commentary in one’s Webcomic comments, but I generally hate inserting RL social commentary in Webcomic comments, so I would never point any of that out. But one could.
Remember, Ed8, it’s the far future and it’s possible to directly modify one’s genetics for mere fashion statements. The likelihood that they can easily deal with the minor health issues of unhealthy food is highly likely. Particularly if the solution doesn’t affect the foods themselves, but instead relies on potentially expensive, if fairly easy, medical technology or surgery. It would even explain why we have never seen an obese rich person in FOT.
Probably, but by that same reasoning of future tech, it’s unlikely that any of that seemingly unhealthy food is even unhealthy any more to begin with. Deep Fried Supersalted SugarLard Chips in the distant future almost certainly will have the health attributes of Broccoli today. Thus explaining why space travellers are perfectly fine with a ship whose entire available menu sounds (to our current RL ears) like Processed-Death-in-a-sack. When all food is equally healthy, everyone will prefer delicious “junk” foods.
I was more pointing out that one might point out that Gright would be an appropriate sponsor for most modern foods. Not that I would actually point that out myself. Of course.
I never do RL socio/political references, only RL music and scifi references. 🙂
This is a Very Good Thing. The #1 reason I’ve dropped many, many other webcomics in the past is them shoehorning politics into it. And that’s true even when it’s politics I might agree with. I just don’t want it in my webcomics. I like hot dogs, and I like ice cream, but that doesn’t mean I want them together, and if I go to my favorite ice cream store and suddenly find half a hot dog in my ice cream, I’m probably not ever going to go back there.
My attitude is that the more a person has a point they want to make in their creative work, the more they run the risk of that work not being very good creatively. It’s hard enough to make something good even when that’s your primary objective, never mind when your attention is diverted by some other priority. And if there’s some point I believe in strongly, why would I want to make it look bad by wrapping it up in a lousy work?
*clicks on imaginary “thumbs up” button*
It’s honestly the same reason I think so many purely commercial/merchandise-driven properties end up sucking, even if the motivations are more noble. The problem isn’t doing something “for the money” like money is fundamentally bad, it’s that doing something for ANY reason other than doing that specific thing well leaves you vulnerable to doing it NOT well.
That right there probably really is a large part of the reason why I dislike it when someone forces extra stuff of that nature into their work, but not being a creator myself I never really thought much about the “why” before, I just knew I didn’t like it. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle!
(On the other hand, Miffy is surely horrified that you would suggest that promoting commercial merchandise should ever NOT be the primary reason for creating something.)
🙂
OH DEAR GOD I HOPE SHE DIDN’T HEAR ME
FOT Comments are now Editable!!! It’s a Christmas miracle!!! 😀
Edit: Now I’m just editing this comment JUST BECAUSE I CAN!!
Oh, that started over a week or so ago. I even helped Blitz with some debugging, as attempting to use the arrow keys while editing changed the page.
And just for the record, I STILL have no idea how any of that cleared up (maybe if I delay for long enough the RSS feed with become unbroken by itself too?)
It’s still doing that for me – pressing certain keys while editing changes the page. I didn’t want to mention it, though, out of concern that any attempt to fix it might completely re-break the editing again. Just be happy with what you can get – having low standards is the secret to happiness!
It’s not an issue with the editing function, it’s an issue with the site’s response to being told to change pages with the arrow keys. It’s not supposed to activate when using the edit function, sure, but Blitz did say that they didn’t even realise that that function had been activated on the site.
Wow! The site really does change pages just by pressing the arrow keys! Who knew?! (Not me, apparently) Now I have lingering regret from all the time I’ve wasted clicking on the “Back” and “Next” buttons. So inefficient!
From what I’ve discovered from really basic experimentation, WordPress is using the arrow keys as a browsing shortcut just in general, whether you’re commenting or not. And yes, as soon as I’ve got time to go rooting through the various layers of site settings, I’m gonna find a way to turn that off, because it’s WAAAAY more likely to be hit by accident than actually be useful as intended.
