page 639 – Your Band Here
Okay, NOW he’s starting to get a little concerned.
Just so you know, I had to actively stop myself from making up band names and tinkering with poster designs. Otherwise, this page could have ended up twenty feet wide and not been done until next week. At LEAST one-fourth of the thoughts I’ve had in my life were some form of “Hey, that’d make a cool band name”
Speaking of making myself stop, I’m afraid the Voting Incentive drought has already started. I was hoping we’d at least make it until Friday before I had to take a break, but I can’t guarantee there’ll BE a page Friday unless I get to work on it right now. Busy busy week, gang.
(Historical Notes: In retrospect, this page is pretty disappointing. It was fun to do, digging up all these weird band name/poster ideas I’d had in my teens and actually using them for something, but… none of it GOES anywhere. The overwhelming majority of these band names never get mentioned in Far Out There again, most of them don’t even feel like they belong in this universe to begin with. I just wish I’d been able to make this comic a bit less about personal in-jokes and more about actually building the expanded pop cultural universe of the comic. Oh, and speaking of things that never went anywhere, look! It’s Todd TV Head again!)
@ Blitz: Your Historical Notes complaint doesn’t make sense to me. Not because I don’t understand the reasoning behind it, but because this is a “charity gig” in the middle of nowhere, that a small travelling Religious Music band was easily able to enter. If it was big enough for a number of major pop cultural icons to populate it, it would be odd. (spoiler) Even with the “related” celebrity party going on.
True, it’s unlikely that anybody affiliated with an event like this would be big enough to appear on the sort of “future-TMZ” media that’s provided most of the pop culture reference we hear so far, but there’s still plenty of ways I could have slipped SOME sort of reference to something that could have been mentioned later. Like, a poster that’s 90% a famous band’s name, only for the smaller text to add “…’s producer’s nephew’s landord presents THE ACTUAL BAND NAME” or some other misleading gag like that. I just feel like most of these posters are neither funny enough nor plot relevant enough to justify hogging an entire page.
