page 959 – A Few Simple Requests
Inspiration is a funny things. The PLAN was for today’s page to be Layla and Alphonse finding someplace quiet to read some more books, which the last page obviously set up. See, I knew the Conventional Wisdom update would be approaching the home stretch right about now, so I wanted a cute little one-panel comic I could draw nice and quick… and would up spending all day failing to some up with a way to make that “simple idea” work. I mean, we’ve kinda seen Layla reading to Alphonse before, and I just couldn’t come up with a fresh gag. Eventually, I got so frustrated that I just gave up on that plan and decided to go think about something, ANYTHING other than Far Out There for a while… and five minutes later the image of Cap’n Crosby getting bombarded by increasingly goofy requests just appeared, fully-formed. Granted, it took a lot longer to draw (and I’m seriously about to fall asleep at my desk as I write this), but I think the end result is a lot funner than The Layla & Alphonse Show ep 278425780 would have been.
And speaking of coming up with ideas where I thought I’d run out, I thought of more Incentive costumes for Jenna!
(Historical Notes: I don’t mention it up above, but I legitimately laughed out loud when Trigger’s line first occurred to me. Also, I still really like the glowy thing Tabitha’s holding. You can see how obsessed I was getting with color/lighting effects by this point.)
@ Historical Notes: Trigger HAD to take it out to show it to the Capn. He had forgotten the actual name of the piece of equipment, and had to show him something in order to get an answer.
Besides, if it HAD been a problem, something would have happened by this point!
If Tabitha’s glowy [totally NOT magical] Science thing were really dangerous she would have locked it next door in the Nursery! Then again, if a room with multiple blast shielding designed to lock up young kids wasn’t used when Megaweapon was on board, it will probably never get used.
Cap’n Crosby probably charges extra for passengers to use the nursery, and nobody wanted to cough up the extra money for him to switch on the nannybots.
