page 565 – It Came From A Wet Place
HEY WOW! I actually got Tuesday’s page done before leaving for Otakon! …unfortunately, that also means I’m writing this before leaving for Otakon… which in turn means I’m running on DANGEROUSLY low sleep. So, yeah, not a lot of insight to be had here. Wet Dog Avatar is funny. Har.
Anyway, the fact that I was able to get this done in advance HOPEFULLY means there’s also a new Voting Incentive… but as I write this, I dunno. There’s only one way to know for sure: go ahead and vote anyway!
EDIT: Guess what? THE IS INDEED A NEW INCENTIVE! So go vote and see it!!!
(Historical Notes: I really really wish Past Me had thought a little bit harder before giving this page that title.)
Actually, water boils when exposed to vacuum, right? Wouldn’t Avatar be able to go outside the ship and dry off a lot faster that way than using hair dryers?
OOOOoooooh, that’s some fiiiiine nitpicking there, I like that!
But seriously, the question would be if Far Out There physics operates under real world rules or sci-fi movie rules, where stuff is traditionally depicted as immediately freezing in space (Or, to put it more accurately, it’d depend on what kind of movie I’d most recently watched before writing the page in question)
Just to be extra nitpicky, the correct answer is: Both. In a vacuum, water both freezes and evaporates. According to the link below, with is surely correct because it has lots of Math, approximately 12% of the water will evaporate before the remaining water freezes, depending on initial assumptions for the temperature of the water.

I’m going to say that it takes quite a while to get outside the ship – based on my previous calculation from strips where the Exposition was shown next to other objects of a known size, the Exposition is about as long as the original starship Enterprise, but with a much larger volume due to its shape – that’s a long way to walk through the ship to get to the airlock while dripping wet and trying not to trip on your oversized robe!
On the other hand, Avatar likely has her own hair dryer, clearly marked “DANGER-LETHAL-FOR AVATAR USE ONLY!!! NO UNAUTHORIZED USE!! THIS MEANS YOU!!” in big red letters. It has a 50MW power source, and probably uses lasers or a particle beam. Elapsed time to completely dry Avatar – 0.15ms.
Now that I think of it – that may be what happened to Ichabod’s previously vaporized companion – he/she may have accidentally tried to use Avatar’s hair dryer.
The specific size of The Exposition is filed right next to the characters’ ages in the “Stuff I’m Leaving Deliberately Vague” folder, but yes, ideally there should be enough room inside both for me to include whatever extra stuff I want AND for it to be an inconveniently long walk to the outer hull.
I like this idea of Avatar having personal grooming items that only an indestructible person could use. It’s been hinted that she doesn’t enjoy being submerged under water very much, so maybe she “bathes” using a thing like that to just burn all the dirt & germs off her exterior?
Also: comment editing seems to be completely turned off again. Just mentioning that in case it wasn’t intentional.
What the- That’s weird, I don’t THINK I was messing anything that would have affected that plugin. Hang on, I’ll see if I can figure out what’s going on…
Yeah, I dunno what’s going on. The plugin is active, and the exact same one is working over on Conventional Wisdom. I’m not sure why it’s not showing up here.
Okay, I’m trying a different plugin, let’s see if this one works…
