page 1295 – ACTION CAPN
I mean, we HAVE seem Avatar do this on her own before… though newbies clicking on that link without understand what’s going on with the perspective will probably be VERY confused. On the other hand, looking back that that page again and then looking right back at THIS one does wonders for my own artistic self esteem. After all this time, I’m finally getting SLIGHTLY better than I used to be at dynamic action poses! Oh, and speaking of “all this time,” I’m pretty sure this is the first point in the entire history of this comic that I’ve had to figure out what the underside of Cap’n Crosby’s boots look like. Over fifteen years, and I can’t recall a time where that came up before. No matter how long you work at something, you’ll always turn out to have figured out a lot less than you thought you did.
Anyway, I’m queuing this page up a day in advance, because WOW I’ve got a lot of stuff to take care of before I head out on the road for Anime Weekend Atlanta. Or, more specifically, I’m leaving a lot earlier than normal and thus have to get things wrapped up a lot sooner than it feels like. HOPEFULLY by the time anybody reads this, I’ll already have next week’s Halloween comic mostly finished, because I reeeaaally don’t want to have to scramble to get it done after I come back. And yeah, speaking of which, next Tuesday is Halloween, so there’ll be a special thing up in place of the next usual page. Under normal circumstances, I like to have said next usual page go up the day after a holiday takes over a regular update slot… but just look back at the start of this paragraph to see why I just don’t have it in me to crank out an extra comic for next week. So, yeah, Halloween next Tuesday, then page 1296 the Tuesday AFTER next. And, hopefully, I’ll be able to pick up TWC Voting Incentives again by that point!
Huh? Is that not just the totally normal way everybody uses an elevator or other vertical transport tube?
I actually can’t think of anybody having been depicted using it any other way in the history of FOT.
You know, that’s actually a valid point. On a quick look back, I could only find one instance of characters actually riding the lift like normal:
https://faroutthere.com/comic/page-43-the-anatomy-of-the-foot-in-mouth/
I guess usually I just cut away to people already arrived at their destination unless something out of the ordinary happens.
@ Blitz: Ichabod was there, that instance doesn’t count. You know as well as I do that Ichabod would always ride the lift whenever it was a decently safe option. It wasn’t one enough times for him that he values the experience.
Younger John-Mclain-style Robot-Fighting Killer-Amazon-Catgirl-Dating Action-Ichabod probably leaped down a few elevator shafts in his day, but today’s Ichabod surely would never be caught doing something so rash and ill-advised. He will, however, tell you a long rambling story about that one time he had to participate in a elevator-shaft-leaping contest for a mission, etc.
See, that’s the thing: Young Ichabod would officially disprove of doing anything so reckless, but end up doing so anyway due to “circumstances beyond his control.” Modern Ichabod uses his experience to anticipate those circumstances and work to avoid them (and sometimes, on rare occasions, he actually SUCCEEDS at it!)
He does seem to have mastered the art of talking others into taking those risks instead. With Maturity comes Great Wisdom. (In theory…I’m still waiting for it myself…)
I suppose the overly-dramatic-striding-onto-the-bridge-as-the-turbolift-doors-open to begin a scene that star trek did a gazillion times just doesn’t work quite as well in a static cartoon environment. (If it did, of course Avi would have a portable expandable turbolift carried around with him so he could stride dramatically out of it as he enters every room)
Also, Far Out There has a scarcity of characters who command the level of authority to make such an entrance, situations where the demonstration such authority would mean anything, and an overlapping of the two within the events of these silly SILLY stories.
Well, that is true, but there’s probably a few who believe they command that level of authority, Avi, Frank, and probably most of the members of F.U.S.E. at least – Mad Science and Overdramatic Megalomania go together like Xalgox Ham and Mutant Eggs! In particular, I expect that Tabitha’s Dad enters every room Dramatically even if it’s empty…just in case. Pattie, on the other hand, has lots of Authority, but I can’t really imagine her doing anything dramatically.
