page 1271 – No Backseat Cooking
FINALLY! Sorry for the delay, gang. In case you missed my warning the other day, this page underwent pretty drastic conceptual overhaul. The original plan was for the whole page to just be Layla being a buttinsky and being way too aggressively interested in her steak preparation. Then, as a totally afterthought, I thought it’d be funny if Avi thought that was something worth being jealous of, and suddenly this whole second panel sprang into existence and I needed to re-think the whole layout to accommodate the extra content and blah blah blah and now it’s Wednesday morning.
Of course, it also didn’t help that I’d gotten a late start on this page in the first place due to all the OTHER stuff I’m trying to get done right now. And on that note, I think I’m just gonna have to say no TWC incentive this week. Yeah, I know it seems like copy/pasting unused AI art shouldn’t be that time consuming, but there really is a BUNCH of stuff I need to hurry up and get done before the end of this month, and they’re all eating into each other’s limited time. Even if it’s just one thing, getting SOMETHING off of my plate over the next few days will help the whole logjam finally clear up. Sorry!
Re: Busy Schedule…..Remember, it’s never too early to start on those Monthlong-Christmas-Special comics! 😀
He knows what he’s doing, and if she keeps distracting him she’ll wind up with the steak that gets burned as a result.
True, that’s what *should* happen, but with Marshall’s personality you know he’ll just take the burned one for himself to eat later and make her a new good one. 🙁
(Also: Mariska trying to hold back Layla from her steak is probably more of her bad judgement in action, she’s liable to get her arm gnawed off in the process. Or some other horrible thing happen to her. Layla does not like to be thwarted in general, and 100x more probably where meat is concerned.
Additional note: I fell like Layla got thrown out of a lot of restaurants in the time…no matte how rich her family was. A great many Chefs lack Marshall’s tolerant nature. Especially ritzy restaurant Chefs.)
I doubt that Layla was thrown out of restaurants… mostly because they were cooking in the back room, and she never knew when they were cooking HER meat.
That said, she was probably banned from Barbeques and similar social meat-based events since she was 8 due to her attitude towards the preparation of meat. Or she was chased away from her homes kitchen with spray bottles on a regular basis. Probably both.
We should also consider the possibility that, maybe, she’s being worse about this now than she was in the past. Like, I dunno, maybe she’s compelled to try and exert more control over her surroundings after a series of recent traumatic events ripped away any sense of safety and stability in her life.
That said, I really do like the notion of restaurants having pictures of Layla with a big WARNING light installed in their kitchens.
Even if we ignore the traumatic events (which is the boring, and cannon, reason she’s acting like this), she could just as easily be doing this simply because she hasn’t had a professionally cooked meal, particularly one with meat, since she got onto the ship. She wants it perfect enough that she’ll cook it herself, if needs be (and the only reason she hasn’t/isn’t, is because she’s been too terrified of burning her meat).
I actually did think about having Layla shout something along the lines of “Do you have any idea how long it’s been since I had a meal that DIDN’T come from a vending machine?” …but then I realized that I couldn’t definitively answer that off the top off my head, and opted not to risk it.
And then her speech bubble continues “It’s been XXXXXXXXX” where the XXXXXXXX part is covered up by someone else’s unrelated speech bubble in front of it.
If it became “a Vending Machine OR a Food Court”, then the answer would be since the day of, or the day before, she entered the ship.
