Page 117 – Something Mischievous This Way Comes
Well, I’m still trying to work out the whole scaling down thing. When I finally get it down, I’ll re-load these last few pages.
That aside, this was a VERY fun page to draw. I always love chances to put a new spin on characters, and there’s PLENTY of that here! Not only do we have some new costumes for everyone (including the first bare feet in Far Out there history), but I even got to play around with their previously unaltered hair! Layla really should let her hair down like this more often, I was quite surprised at natural it looks like that. Trigger, on the other hand… Well, nothing says “I don’t wake up easily” like mussed up hair, but it was hard to come up with a way to make it MORE messing looking than usual.
Oh, by the way: That little strip of a panel in the middle says “Unnecessary space between panels.” I’m afraid that putting text over patterns is another aspect of Manga Studio that I haven’t quite licked yet.
(Historical Note: UUUUUGH these early pages. And to make matters worse, this is another one where I no longer have the original page file to try and re-edit. I managed to do a LITTLE bit of re-sizing of the existing page, which hopefully smoothed out the pixelated mess a BIT, but there’s only so much I could do at this point. Well at least Bunny Suit Avatar is still weirdly adorable)
i would like to see hoppy feet jim jams again. the name and look are adorable
I was just thinking that I missed drawing those, but it feels weird to suggest that Stilez & Tax would be patient enough to give her time to go and change into them.
It’s probably safer that way – Tabitha would squee herself into unconsciousness if she saw that.
(And then insist on making matching ones for Tax and Stilez)
i want to see that now as well. could tabitha get tax excited about putting stilez into cute outfits? or other way around?
The other issue: Avatar going off to change clothes would very likely require me to finally decide what Avatar’s room looks like… and even after all this time I have NO idea how that would turn out.
holy crap, i hadn’t even thought about that, we have never seen that. i could see her being either minimalist or maximalist i wonder what she would go for in decoration
See, this is the thing: it’s one of those payoffs that basically has to be something totally awesome/hilarious/weird or else it’ll be a MASSIVE letdown. So I’ve just been avoiding it.
I honestly just assumed that her room was basically the same as Trigger’s & Layla’s. It’s the individual furnishings that would change, and Avatar would likely prioritise being able to KEEP everything for eternity, as we already know she does that with her clothes.
As such, I suspect she wouldn’t have much to her own name that could decay over time, and most of THAT is dedicated to ensuring that she can reach the indestructible stuff should the ship explode or implode.
See, that’s the most REASONABLE idea by a long shot… but this IS Far Out There we’re talking about. I feel like such a popular character would demand a more decidedly UNreasonable reveal.
have we confirmed she has a room and doesn’t just simply use the entire ship as her room? all her possessions are in different closets across the ship? reveal could come from trigger trying to break into a random closet because he is bored and finds avatars hoppy feet jim-jams. “HEY! why are you raiding my clothes!” or could be that captain offered her any room she chose the secret room, and she hasn’t been able to get in, but refuses to change her mind.
Blitz, no. The unreasonable things in FOT aren’t the major character’s preferences; it’s the settings & set pieces.
The thing that should surprise people would be something the reader’s don’t notice, but the characters DO, like the fact that her room doesn’t have any form of computers (they need updating too often), that it’s very specifically one of the internal rooms that don’t have a viewing window to the great emptiness of space, or the fact that it has two stand-alone closets built with escape-pod thrusters. You know, the little things the characters can comment on to give us a bit more of a view into Avatar’s character.
it obviously has a light source that can’t be shut off by mad or sane science
