page 22 – The Art Of Placing The Foot In The Mouth
Original note – Mar 14, 2008
Woops. And now Ichabod’s true character really starts to show. The guy’s good at Nitpicking, but he’s also a know-it-all who needs to appear on top of the situation at all times. Case in point, he feels the need to whip up this bit about Layla being fine rather than admit that he just doesn’t LIKE the brat. Too bad for him that this is one brat you should be VERY careful about messing with…
I’m going to have to argue with Layla here. Oddly enough, in Real Life, senior executives at big corporations who get kicked out for incompetence rarely seem to have any difficulty at getting another senior corporate exec job soon thereafter. I’ve never really understood that. I suppose that it turns out “it’s not what you know (or how competent you are) it’s who you know” is really true for execs. I’m not sure if that works for criminal executives, though, so maybe she knows more than I do about that
There’s looooots to sat about sketchy execs and what have you, but in Layla’s case, the situation is probably a little different since most if not all of her customers/employers were one kind of criminal or another. I’m sure that people in a business where anonymity is important would be wary of recruiting somebody who did ANYTHING high profile, especially if it involved allegations of screwing up.
Then again, this could be another point where the retcon could change how this conversation “really” happened. If Layla actually stormed out on Pattie of her own volition, her explanation to Ichabod might just be an excuse.
Now this actually is kinda funny: Turns out that the Executhieves of the RL company I worked for for the last few decades lost a few tens of billions of dollars last year on a bungled deal, and so they decided this year to lay off tens of thousands of us nobody-employees (myself included, themselves not included) – the punch line here being that it wasn’t enough for them to just fire us all for their bungling, they spitefully provisioned it so that we’re not able to work again in the field for a minimum of 6 months after they kicked us out – so now I kind of feel bad for picking on Layla – she probably had a “noncompete clause” forced on her when she was fired- – that would perfectly explain her inability to get work.
It was funnier when it happened to Layla, though. 😀
RL does seem to imitate art…who knew that FOT would the the art that it would imitate, though! 😉
Layla didn’t have a non-compete clause forced onto her. Layla’s reputation as being a ruthless employer was ruined by Ichabod to the point where nobody would employ her. And as she only has experience is in BEING a ruthless employer, and no alternative qualifications, it’s impossible for her to get another job.
Basically, she’s an employee trained on the job, and who was fired after it was ensured that she could never work in that industry again, if she could even work again.
…that said, when I finally get around to re-writing this opening arc, it WOULD be appropriate to have any number of incredibly crappy contractual clauses bite Layla in the bit here. Specifically, stuff that was only ever intended to affect OTHER people, not her.
(Remember, in the retconed-but-not-actually-shown-yet version of this plot line, Layla’s Mom only plans of demoting her to some menial job for years. It’s Layla herself who chooses to storm out of the family business completely. The realization that now there’s all this extra legalese that is only coming down on her thanks to her impulsive blow-up could give her that much more reason to try and deflect as much blame as possible over to Ichabod)
